Bardolino is located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, 30 km from Verona, on a hilly territory nestled between the lake to the West and the morainic hill separating the Gardalake itself from the Adige Valley in its final part where it flows into the Po Valley. Bardolino is 68 meters above sea level.
History and Culture
That it has been inhabited for a long time is demonstrated by the numerous finds, which attest to life in Roman times, such as coins, cippi, tombstones, sculptures. Many local place names also testify to a Latin civilization. Remains of Roman constructions have been discovered almost everywhere; for example, at the base of the Rocca (mountain located between Bardolino and Garda), you can still see remains of large walls, huge stone boulders.
The primitive castle of Bardolino, mentioned in a deed from 1100 and of which today remain the two gates and the rectangular tower located on the lakeside, is thought to have been built towards the end of the 9th century. Composed of sturdy walls and towers, it enclosed the center of the old town.
